Claude AI Text Watermarks Explained (August 2026)
Anthropic now embeds invisible watermarks in Claude text worldwide under EU AI Act transparency rules. What the marks are, what they are not, and how Human Writes removes them.
Anthropic confirmed in August 2026 that new Claude models embed invisible watermarks in generated text, applied worldwide to comply with EU AI Act transparency rules.
You will not see the mark on screen. It is woven into the text at the model level, survives copy-paste, and may persist through light editing. That is why searches for "Claude watermark" and "remove Claude watermark" spiked the same week.
This post explains what Anthropic announced, what the limits are, and what to do if you need clean draft text. For removal workflow: How to Remove Claude Watermarks. For ChatGPT comparison: Claude vs ChatGPT Watermarks.
What Anthropic announced
Anthropic signed the EU AI Act Article 50(2) Code of Practice on transparency for AI-generated content. Key points from the Claude Help Center:
| Topic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Start date | Models launched on or after August 2, 2026 mark output at launch |
| Scope | Global, not EU-only |
| Products | Claude app, API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Claude Tag, major cloud partners |
| Text | Imperceptible watermark woven into generated text |
| Files | C2PA signed provenance on supported types (SVG, PNG, JPG) |
| Detection tools | Anthropic will publish guidance; public detector not available yet |
| Older models | Marking support rolling out during transition period |
Two marking techniques (text vs files)
1. Embedded text watermarks
Claude weaves a machine-readable signal into word choice across the response. Anthropic does not publish the algorithm name, but describes it as statistical marking at token level, not visible Unicode characters.
2. C2PA file provenance
When Claude outputs supported image or vector files, signed metadata can record that Claude processed the file. That is separate from text watermarks and can be stripped by format conversion or screenshots.
For invisible Unicode characters (common on ChatGPT paste), see Understanding ChatGPT Watermarks.
What Anthropic says the watermark is not
Anthropic is explicit that detection is a signal, not a verdict:
- A mark can appear on text Claude only edited or translated, not originally wrote.
- No mark does not prove human authorship (heavy edit, short passage, older unmarked model, stripped metadata).
- Marking does not replace disclosure policies at your school or workplace.
That matches how we talk about AI scores: review signals, then use your judgment.
Unicode vs statistical: what Human Writes removes
| Kind | Typical source | Human Writes |
|---|---|---|
| Unicode / zero-width | Paste artifacts from some AI UIs | Removes on scan or humanize |
| Statistical / Claude token-level | Claude models from Aug 2026 | Removes when you humanize (rewrites draft into natural voice) |
Human Writes removes AI watermarks. Paste Claude text on the watermark checker landing page (Continue to Human Writes), scan or humanize, then review the built-in AI score.
We do not claim access to Anthropic's private detector key. Human Writes removes watermark signals through Unicode stripping and humanization.
Who should care
- Students submitting Claude-assisted drafts to Turnitin or LMS uploads
- Freelancers delivering client copy that must not carry hidden fingerprint bytes
- Developers piping Claude API output into products (Article 50 may apply to your deployment too)
- SEO and content teams publishing AI-assisted articles

Practical next steps
- Assume new Claude output may be marked until Anthropic documents detection tools.
- Paste into Human Writes before final submission if watermark removal matters for your workflow.
- Humanize once for statistical marks; avoid five rewriter loops.
- Keep your facts and citations accurate. Removing a watermark does not fix invented sources.
- Follow your institution's AI policy on disclosure regardless of marks.
Bottom line
Claude text watermarks are real, invisible, and global as of August 2026. They are not proof of cheating, and absence of a mark is not proof of human authorship.
If you need clean output, Human Writes removes AI watermarks: Unicode on every pass, statistical Claude marks when you humanize. Start at /watermark-checker or paste directly on Human Writes.
