How to Humanize a CFP Abstract After ChatGPT
CFP abstracts fail when they sell a vibe instead of a talk. Lock the claim, method, and what the audience will walk away with. Humanize voice once the presentation outline is real.
A CFP abstract is a contract with the room, not a marketing blurb. ChatGPT defaults to “this session explores emerging best practices” without saying what you will show, teach, or argue in the time slot. Reviewers accept talks they can imagine. Vague abstracts die in the pile.
Human Writes is the voice pass after your outline and evidence are locked. It is not a substitute for a talk you have not built.

What committees actually select
| Pattern | Why it fails |
|---|---|
| “Explore / discuss / share insights” | No deliverable |
| Field importance without your angle | Could be anyone’s pitch |
| Invented case studies or metrics | Credibility risk on stage |
| Scope for a book, not a slot | Overpromise |
| Synonym churn of the CFP theme | No fit signal |
Detectors may flag smooth prose. Program chairs flag empty sessions first.
Lock the presentation card before any model
| Field | Your entry |
|---|---|
| One-sentence claim | What attendees should believe or be able to do after |
| Format + minutes | Talk, panel, workshop; exact length |
| Evidence you own | Study, shipping story, demo, dataset you can show |
| Audience level | Beginner / practitioner / research |
| What you will not invent | Client names, n, revenue, citations |
| Track keywords from the CFP | Exact phrases the form uses |
Prompt: “Turn this presentation card into a CFP abstract under [N] words. Keep my claim wording. Do not add results or sources I did not list.”
If you cannot fill the evidence row, you do not have an abstract yet. You have a wish list. Build the talk outline first: three beats, one demo or example, closing takeaway. Related craft: sales deck narration for spoken delivery structure.
Before and after
AI vibe sludge:
This session explores innovative approaches to cross-functional collaboration in modern organizations, offering actionable insights for leaders navigating complexity in a rapidly changing landscape.
After presentation card + one pass:
In 25 minutes I walk through how our support and product teams cut handoff tickets 31% in one quarter by replacing Slack digests with a single weekly triage board. Attendees leave with a one-page board template and the failure modes we hit in week two.
Second version is schedulable. It can be wrong on impact. That is still better than unfalsifiable “insights.”
Section checklist (typical CFP)
| Section | Keep sacred | Soften with humanize |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Exact keywords the track uses | Tone only |
| Problem / gap | Your framing, not field platitudes | Cadence |
| Method / approach | What you will show | Clarity |
| Results / proof | Numbers you can defend | Do not paraphrase digits |
| Takeaway | One concrete outcome | Cut AI flourish |
| Bio (if separate) | Facts only | Light polish |
Some CFPs demand structured fields (background, objectives, methods). Fill those from the card. Do not paste one essay into five boxes.
Workflow
- Write the talk outline and timebox each beat.
- Fill the presentation card by hand.
- Draft the abstract from the card only.
- Match word limit and required headings character-for-character.
- One Human Writes pass for voice on stiff framing sentences.
- Re-check every number and named case against your slides or paper.
- Dry-run the opening two minutes aloud (oral speech habits).
- Disclose AI editing if the organizer or employer requires it (ethics checklist).
Industry talk vs research CFP
| Job | Success looks like | AI failure mode |
|---|---|---|
| Industry / practitioner CFP | Clear session promise + takeaway artifact | “Best practices” with no demo |
| Academic conference abstract | Methods and results you ran | Invented n or significance |
| Workshop proposal | Timed exercises attendees can finish | Vague “interactive discussion” |
| Panel abstract | Distinct angle per speaker | Four people saying the same theme |
For finished-paper abstracts, use the research abstract guide. Practitioner CFPs are closer to a session promise than IMRaD. If your form asks for learning objectives, write verbs the room can observe: build, diagnose, ship, compare - not “understand the importance of.”
Timing and title discipline
Titles carry track keywords. Do not “humanize” away the phrase the committee searches. Keep the working title boring and searchable; save wit for the first slide if you must. Timebox the abstract claim to the slot: a 45-minute workshop can promise a template; a 12-minute lightning talk cannot promise a full methodology review.
Read your abstract aloud in under 60 seconds. If you run out of air before the takeaway, cut adjectives, not the deliverable. Spoken habits overlap oral presentation scripts.
What not to do
- Promise a live demo you have not rehearsed.
- Name a client without clearance.
- Let the model “improve” your contribution into a different study.
- Chase a detector score instead of track fit.
- Submit the abstract before the slides exist in at least skeleton form.
- Paste last year’s abstract and swap the buzzword.
Bottom line
A CFP abstract is graded on what you will actually present in the room: claim, evidence, takeaway, time. Lock that card first. Then polish voice. Human Writes helps the second step - not the first.
