How to Humanize a Comic Script After ChatGPT

How to Humanize a Comic Script After ChatGPT

ChatGPT comic scripts read like short stories with "Panel 1" pasted on. Lock page count, panel count per page, and who speaks before AI. Humanize captions once with Story purpose—not balloon text.

Comic scripts are spatial writing. ChatGPT defaults to prose with panel labels: long paragraphs where an artist needed five boxes, camera directions nobody asked for, and dialogue that would overflow the balloon.

Editors and artists reject scripts that ignore page count and panel budget. A humanizer that polishes captions but merges panels or rewrites speech is not helping—it is breaking the layout before pencil hits paper.

Human Writes is the voice pass after panel count and cast are locked. Choose Story purpose. Humanize captions and action once per page—not dialogue, not page numbers, not panel counts.

What AI comic scripts get wrong

FailureArtist reads
Prose blocks"Where do I cut panels?"
Panel count driftPage 1 has nine beats for five panels
Novel interiorityUn drawable thought paragraphs
Camera soupWIDE, CLOSE-UP without a director
Dialogue driftHumanizer flattens punch lines

Scripts fail on grid discipline, not on literary adjectives.

Panel count lock before any model

Copy this into your prompt and doc header:

PagePanels allowedBeats (one line each)
15Hook visual; establish location; intro hero; inciting object; page-turn
24

Rules:

  1. Panel count is fixed before ChatGPT—model may not add a sixth panel on page 1.
  2. One beat per panel in the outline table—expand in script, not in panel count.
  3. Dialogue blocks are read-only in humanize passes.
  4. Captions are optional; if used, one per panel max unless you choose otherwise.
  5. SFX stay exact if letterer already assigned style.

If you cannot state (3), paste captions and action without balloons for the humanize step.

Before and after (panel budget respected)

AI script excerpt (page 1, five panels requested):

Panel 1: The rain fell heavily as Maya stood contemplating the mysterious letter she had received, her heart heavy with the weight of memories from childhood summers at the lake, the camera slowly pushing in on her tear-streaked face while thunder rolled in the distance.

After panel lock (five beats, drawable):

Panel 1: Wide—Maya on apartment stoop. Envelope, no return address. Rain on railing. Panel 2: Close—stamp: LAKEVIEW, 1998. Her thumb smudges the ink. Panel 3: Medium—neighbor passes with dog; Maya hides envelope behind back. Panel 4: Close—she breaks seal. Single photo: dock, two kids, faces out of frame. Panel 5: Wide—she looks up toward bus stop. Caption: "Some summers do not stay buried."

Second version gives the artist five drawable beats and one caption—not a novella in panel 1.

Workflow (one page)

  1. Set total pages and panels per page in a grid doc the artist approves.
  2. Fill the beat table one line per panel—no model yet.
  3. Draft captions and action for one page; keep dialogue in a side column.
  4. Cut unfilmable interiority and camera lines the model added.
  5. One Human Writes pass with Story on captions and action only.
  6. Diff balloon text against master—restore every line if changed.
  7. Letter count check: read dialogue aloud; trim if it will not fit the tier.

For long-form fiction rhythm outside comics, see novel chapters and short stories.

What not to do

  • Let the model add a splash page you did not budget.
  • Humanize five times until panel headers merge into paragraphs.
  • Paste 22 pages hoping panel count survives.
  • Rewrite dialogue to "match" smoother captions.
  • Treat humanizing as permission to hide AI use from a publisher—disclose when required (KDP and contests).

Bottom line

Comic scripts win when panel count is locked and every beat is drawable. Story purpose, one page, one pass. Balloons stay sacred.

Paste stiff caption prose on Human Writes after the grid matches what your artist signed off on.
