What are AI Watermarks?
Unicode Watermarks
AI systems may embed invisible Unicode characters in generated text to identify AI-produced content.
Character Detection
Our tool detects and categorizes invisible watermark characters by type.
Why Claude users should scan before publishing
Claude is popular for long-form drafting, research summaries, and professional editing workflows. Like other frontier models, its output can include invisible Unicode characters when you copy from the chat interface or API response into email, Notion, Word, or a CMS.
Editors and freelancers use this checker as a final hygiene step: the visible prose stays intact, but hidden markers that could break layout or trigger automated scans are stripped out.
Because Claude excels at structured outputs — memos, briefs, bullet-heavy reports — users often copy entire sections at once. That bulk paste is exactly when zero-width joiners and soft hyphens are most likely to land between list items or heading levels without any visible clue on screen.
Professional writing workflows
If you paste Claude output into Google Docs for client review, run a scan first. Hidden directional marks and zero-width joiners occasionally appear in exported text and cause hard-to-spot line-break bugs. Cleaning takes seconds and avoids back-and-forth with formatting issues.
The same applies when Claude drafts email sequences or landing-page copy that will be split across Mailchimp blocks, Webflow rich-text fields, or HubSpot modules. One invisible character in the master paste can reproduce across every block when you split by paragraph.
Delivering Claude drafts to clients without formatting surprises
Many freelance writers use Claude for first drafts, then move text into a client-branded Google Doc or Word template. Before you share the link, paste the body into this checker and replace the draft with the cleaned version. Clients notice spacing glitches and “broken” bullets far more often than subtle wording changes — Unicode hygiene prevents those support emails.
For newsletter or blog workflows, scan after Claude generates the draft but before you add images, embeds, or CMS blocks. Hidden characters pasted into HTML fields can break schema markup or cause validation errors in SEO plugins. The visible headline and paragraphs stay identical; only non-printing bytes are removed.
If you bill by revision round, include a quick Unicode scan in your internal QA checklist alongside fact-checking and brand-voice edits. It takes less time than explaining why paragraph 3 has invisible spacing in Safari but not Chrome.
Agencies managing multiple Claude projects should standardise on “scan before client delivery” the same way they standardise on plagiarism checks for outsourced writers. The step is mechanical, fast, and removes an entire category of formatting tickets from your support queue.
Treat the cleaned paste as your source of truth for every downstream tool — never re-copy from the raw Claude chat after you have scanned once.
How to check Claude text for invisible watermarks
Checking a piece of AI-generated text for invisible watermarks takes less than a minute:
- Copy your AI-generated text. Copy the text you want to check from Claude, or paste output you previously exported from it.
- Paste into the checker. Paste the text into the input box on this page.
- Run the check. Click Check for watermarks. The tool scans for invisible Unicode characters and hidden formatting markers in seconds.
- Copy the cleaned output. Review the detection report, then copy the cleaned, watermark-free version of your text.
What hidden characters Claude output can carry
AI systems can hide two broadly different kinds of signal in their output. Our checker is specifically built to detect and remove the first kind — invisible Unicode characters. The second kind, statistical watermarks, requires rewriting to neutralise.
Invisible Unicode watermarks
These are real characters inserted between visible letters that don't render on screen. They travel with copy-paste, get carried into Word documents, Google Docs and CMS fields, and can fingerprint text back to the model that produced it. The checker scans for:
- Zero-width space (U+200B)
- Zero-width non-joiner (U+200C) and zero-width joiner (U+200D)
- Word joiner (U+2060)
- Soft hyphen (U+00AD)
- Variation selectors (U+FE00 - U+FE0F)
- Left-to-right and right-to-left marks (U+200E / U+200F)
- Byte order mark / ZWNBSP (U+FEFF)
- Other non-printing formatting characters commonly used as covert channels
Statistical (cryptographic) watermarks
These are patterns in which words the model chooses. They are imperceptible in any one sentence and only emerge over many words. A Unicode scan cannot remove them — to neutralise a statistical watermark you typically need to lightly rewrite the text. Our guide to natural AI writing techniques covers how to do this without losing meaning.
Frequently asked questions
Does Claude embed watermarks in its responses?
Claude output can carry invisible Unicode characters after copy-paste, similar to other AI chat tools. Anthropic may also use broader content-integrity approaches over time. This checker focuses on detectable hidden characters you can remove immediately.
Is this the same as an AI detector for Claude?
No. This tool scans for invisible Unicode characters, not statistical AI-authorship scores. It complements detectors by cleaning byte-level markers before you run other checks or publish.
Can I use this on Claude API responses?
Yes. Paste any plain-text response from the Anthropic API or Claude.ai interface. The checker works on the raw string regardless of how it was generated.
Does cleaning Claude text affect tone or structure?
Removing invisible characters does not rewrite sentences. Tone, headings, and lists remain as you pasted them.
Is this watermark checker free?
Yes. You can scan up to 500 words without an account. Sign in for longer documents, full cleaned text, and a character-level breakdown of every hidden marker removed.
Is my text stored when I use the checker?
We process your text only to return a detection report and cleaned output. We do not retain the content of your pasted text for any other purpose.
