What are AI Watermarks?

Unicode Watermarks

AI systems may embed invisible Unicode characters in generated text to identify AI-produced content.

Character Detection

Our tool detects and categorizes invisible watermark characters by type.

Research summaries and citation paste chains

Perplexity users often copy cited answers into Notion, Roam, Google Docs, or slide decks. The citations and links look fine, but invisible Unicode characters can hide between words — especially when answers are long or include formatted lists.

Scanning before you archive research prevents odd search behaviour, broken footnotes, and hard-to-debug export issues downstream.

Because Perplexity emphasises sources, users trust the visible citations and skip byte-level inspection. Hidden characters are the one class of problem that survives that trust — they do not show in preview mode but still break exports.

Students and analysts

If you use Perplexity to gather background for a report, run the final pasted excerpt through this checker before submission. It does not verify citations for you, but it removes hidden characters that can make automated systems treat the file as corrupted or machine-tagged.

Course instructors increasingly accept AI-assisted research when disclosed. Scanning Perplexity paste is a concrete hygiene step you can describe in a methods footnote without overstating what the tool does.

When you merge Perplexity excerpts from multiple queries into one document, scan the merged section too. Concatenation does not remove characters that were already present in one of the source pastes.

Building a research notebook without broken citations

When you copy a Perplexity answer with inline citations into Notion or Roam, paste into this checker first, then paste the cleaned text into your note. Visible URLs and bracketed references remain; only invisible Unicode between tokens is stripped. That prevents footnote plugins and PDF exporters from mis-aligning citation anchors.

For slide decks, scan each bullet block separately if you assembled the deck from multiple Perplexity threads. Long research sessions often mean dozens of small pastes — any one uncleaned block can introduce zero-width characters that break presenter notes or PDF text extraction.

Analysts preparing client memos should scan before converting to PDF. Hidden characters that survive into PDF copy-paste can trigger redaction tools or DLP scanners to flag benign documents. Cleaning at the research stage is faster than re-exporting a memo the night before delivery.

PhD students building literature reviews from Perplexity threads should scan each chapter export before sharing with advisors. Reviewers focus on argument quality; invisible Unicode should not be the reason a draft fails to open cleanly in reference managers.

Journalists fact-checking Perplexity summaries should scan before moving quotes into CMS quote blocks. Hidden characters inside quotation marks are a common cause of mismatched smart-quote rendering in published articles and newsletters.

How to check Perplexity text for invisible watermarks

Checking a piece of AI-generated text for invisible watermarks takes less than a minute:

  1. Copy your AI-generated text. Copy the text you want to check from Perplexity, or paste output you previously exported from it.
  2. Paste into the checker. Paste the text into the input box on this page.
  3. Run the check. Click Check for watermarks. The tool scans for invisible Unicode characters and hidden formatting markers in seconds.
  4. Copy the cleaned output. Review the detection report, then copy the cleaned, watermark-free version of your text.

What hidden characters Perplexity output can carry

AI systems can hide two broadly different kinds of signal in their output. Our checker is specifically built to detect and remove the first kind — invisible Unicode characters. The second kind, statistical watermarks, requires rewriting to neutralise.

Invisible Unicode watermarks

These are real characters inserted between visible letters that don't render on screen. They travel with copy-paste, get carried into Word documents, Google Docs and CMS fields, and can fingerprint text back to the model that produced it. The checker scans for:

  • Zero-width space (U+200B)
  • Zero-width non-joiner (U+200C) and zero-width joiner (U+200D)
  • Word joiner (U+2060)
  • Soft hyphen (U+00AD)
  • Variation selectors (U+FE00 - U+FE0F)
  • Left-to-right and right-to-left marks (U+200E / U+200F)
  • Byte order mark / ZWNBSP (U+FEFF)
  • Other non-printing formatting characters commonly used as covert channels

Statistical (cryptographic) watermarks

These are patterns in which words the model chooses. They are imperceptible in any one sentence and only emerge over many words. A Unicode scan cannot remove them — to neutralise a statistical watermark you typically need to lightly rewrite the text. Our guide to natural AI writing techniques covers how to do this without losing meaning.

Frequently asked questions

Does Perplexity watermark its answers?

Like other AI interfaces, Perplexity output can include invisible Unicode characters when copied. This checker removes those markers from the text you paste.

Will cleaning Perplexity text remove citation links?

Visible URLs and citation text remain. Only non-printing Unicode characters are stripped.

Can I scan long Perplexity threads?

Anonymous users can scan up to 500 words per check. Sign in for longer documents and full cleaned output.

Will Perplexity citation numbers survive cleaning?

Yes. Visible numbers, brackets, and URLs in the pasted answer are preserved. The checker only removes characters that do not render on screen.

Is this watermark checker free?

Yes. You can scan up to 500 words without an account. Sign in for longer documents, full cleaned text, and a character-level breakdown of every hidden marker removed.

Is my text stored when I use the checker?

We process your text only to return a detection report and cleaned output. We do not retain the content of your pasted text for any other purpose.
