What are AI Watermarks?
Unicode Watermarks
AI systems may embed invisible Unicode characters in generated text to identify AI-produced content.
Character Detection
Our tool detects and categorizes invisible watermark characters by type.
Copilot in Word, Outlook, and enterprise workflows
Microsoft Copilot drafts emails, summaries, and document sections inside tools your team already uses. When you copy a Copilot suggestion into another field — or export chat output into Word — hidden Unicode characters can come along for the ride.
Enterprise users run this scan before external sends or compliance review so formatting stays predictable and text does not carry stray byte-level markers.
Copilot’s value is speed inside Office; the trade-off is that users paste more often and inspect less. A Unicode checker closes that gap without slowing down the drafting experience — paste once here, then paste the cleaned string everywhere else.
Why hidden characters matter in Office paste chains
Word and Outlook sometimes preserve zero-width characters through multiple paste steps. That can create ghost spacing, broken mail-merge fields, or styles that will not apply cleanly. Scanning once at the source is faster than debugging formatting later.
Teams that share Copilot prompts should also share the cleaned output template. Otherwise each teammate pastes raw Copilot text independently and you get inconsistent spacing across otherwise identical deliverables.
If you use Copilot to draft tables or numbered lists, scan before converting to Word styles. Hidden characters between list items are a common reason numbering restarts unexpectedly after a template merge.
Enterprise handoff: Copilot chat to Word to Outlook
Copilot users often generate a paragraph in the sidebar, paste it into the document body, then lift a excerpt into an Outlook reply. Each hop can duplicate invisible Unicode unless you clean at the first export from Copilot. Paste the Copilot source text here, copy the cleaned result, and use that string for every downstream paste in the chain.
For PowerPoint speaker notes or SharePoint news posts, the same rule applies: clean before the first Office paste. Hidden characters in notes fields are notorious for breaking presenter view line breaks and mobile SharePoint rendering. Compliance teams appreciate a documented hygiene step even when policies allow Copilot assistance — you are removing non-printing bytes, not altering factual claims.
If your organisation uses both Copilot and other models, scan each source separately. Mixing cleaned Copilot text with uncleaned ChatGPT paste in one document reintroduces the problem in the uncleaned sections.
Legal and HR teams drafting policy summaries with Copilot should scan before PDF distribution. Hidden characters in regulated communications create unnecessary risk during e-discovery or archival search, even when the visible policy language is correct.
Save the cleaned Copilot paste as plain text in your team wiki so new hires inherit the habit instead of learning about zero-width characters from a client escalation.
How to check Microsoft Copilot text for watermarks
Checking a piece of AI-generated text for invisible watermarks takes less than a minute:
- Copy your AI-generated text. Copy the text you want to check from Microsoft Copilot, or paste output you previously exported from it.
- Paste into the checker. Paste the text into the input box on this page.
- Run the check. Click Check for watermarks. The tool scans for invisible Unicode characters and hidden formatting markers in seconds.
- Copy the cleaned output. Review the detection report, then copy the cleaned, watermark-free version of your text.
What hidden characters Microsoft Copilot output can carry
AI systems can hide two broadly different kinds of signal in their output. Our checker is specifically built to detect and remove the first kind — invisible Unicode characters. The second kind, statistical watermarks, requires rewriting to neutralise.
Invisible Unicode watermarks
These are real characters inserted between visible letters that don't render on screen. They travel with copy-paste, get carried into Word documents, Google Docs and CMS fields, and can fingerprint text back to the model that produced it. The checker scans for:
- Zero-width space (U+200B)
- Zero-width non-joiner (U+200C) and zero-width joiner (U+200D)
- Word joiner (U+2060)
- Soft hyphen (U+00AD)
- Variation selectors (U+FE00 - U+FE0F)
- Left-to-right and right-to-left marks (U+200E / U+200F)
- Byte order mark / ZWNBSP (U+FEFF)
- Other non-printing formatting characters commonly used as covert channels
Statistical (cryptographic) watermarks
These are patterns in which words the model chooses. They are imperceptible in any one sentence and only emerge over many words. A Unicode scan cannot remove them — to neutralise a statistical watermark you typically need to lightly rewrite the text. Our guide to natural AI writing techniques covers how to do this without losing meaning.
Frequently asked questions
Does Microsoft Copilot add watermarks to text?
Copilot output can include invisible Unicode characters after copy-paste, like other AI assistants. This checker strips those characters while leaving visible content unchanged.
Can I use this on Copilot in Word sidebar output?
Yes. Copy the generated passage from Word, Copilot chat, or Bing Copilot and paste it here. The tool works on any plain-text export.
Is this suitable for corporate compliance review?
It helps as a hygiene step for hidden-character removal. It does not replace your organisation’s AI-use or data-handling policies.
Does Copilot in Word insert different hidden characters than Copilot chat?
Both paths can include invisible Unicode after copy-paste. Scan the text you actually plan to send or publish, regardless of which Copilot surface generated it.
Is this watermark checker free?
Yes. You can scan up to 500 words without an account. Sign in for longer documents, full cleaned text, and a character-level breakdown of every hidden marker removed.
Is my text stored when I use the checker?
We process your text only to return a detection report and cleaned output. We do not retain the content of your pasted text for any other purpose.
